SWIFT is a EU project

EU IST FP7 Project SWIFT

SWIFT (Secure Widespread Identities for Federated Telecommunications) is a European Union funded project of the 7th Framework Programme. The project leverages identity technology as a key to integrate service and transport infrastructures for the benefit of users and the providers. It focuses on extending identity functions and federation to the network while addressing usability and privacy concerns.

Partners

Nine Parters form the SWIFT Consortium

The SWIFT consortium is led by Fraunhofer SIT. Other members are Alcatel-Lucent, Deutsche Telekom, Dracotic, ITAveiro, NEC (Technical Lead), Portugal Telecom, University of Murcia and University of Stuttgart.

Duration

30 Month Project Duration

The project proposal was submitted to the EU Commission as part of Call 1 of the 7th Framework Programme. Negotiations were completed in September 2007, and the final Description of work was approved in November of the same year. The project started operation on 1st Janaury 2008 and has an overall 30 month time span. The planned completion date is 30th June 2010.

WP1

Work Methods, Dissemination and Exploitation

This WP is responsible for defining the work working methods and to manage dissemination. The task includes the definition work methods, dissemination towards the general public and towards journals and conferences, standardization co-ordination and exploitation within the participating companies and beyond.

WP2

Identity Framework

This WP drives the technical work by defining an overall architecture, the IdM platform to be adopted and dealing with the more general issues of federation, name resolution and data modelling. Based on initial scenarios and use-cases, it will identify the gaps in the SoA and address them. The WP will also handle name resolution, federation and defining the data models used in cross-layer information exchange.

WP3

Security Architecture

The WP develops the necessary security requirements and protocols. It will deal with the overall security analysis as well as specify and implement specific security primitives. Topics covered are the threat model, assurance metrics and the privacy and security implications of identity transfer. It will also instantiate some privacy and security enhancing techniques at different layers and crypto primitives.

WP4

Service and Network Architecture

This WP deals with the specific protocols which interact with the identity platform at service and network level. Whether existing protocols will be adapted to the identity architecture or new network and service level protocols need to be designed will depend on their suitability for the identity platform. The WP will deal with an network-related functions, such as AAA, billing and charging, mobility and roaming.

WP5

Scenarios and Evaluation

The WP will design scenarios based on use-cases which demonstrate the benefit of a cross-layer architecture. It will also design sub-demonstrators, taking the scenarios and use-cases as a basis, and instantiate these demonstrators using the software provided by the other work-packages.

Third SWIFT Technical Meeting in Stuttgart PDF Print E-mail

At the third SWIFT meeting, which has been hosted by the Institute of Communication Networks and Computer Engineering at the University of Stuttgart ,  the "Security Architecture" and "Service and Network Architecture" work packages were kicked off.

Based on a thorough analysis of the security threats for existing identity management solutions requirements will be defined for the intended SWIFT security architecture. This architecture will consider the distribution of identity management functions based on different trust models.

In contrast WP4 will take care on the integration of IdM functionality in the existing service and networking landscape.img_2868_small.jpg

First SWIFT Technical Meeting PDF Print E-mail
During 12-14 March 2008, SWIFT project had its first technical meeting, which was hosted by the University of Murcia. This meeting served as the kick-off meeting for WP3 and WP4. Also, it was used to define the work on the scenarios (WP5) and for a first design annd proposal for the SWIFT architecture (WP2). The meeting was very productive with intensive discussions. The agreements reached will allow the requiriments of the different components to be detailed, and enable a first picture of the SWIFT approach in the next months. Next meeting will be hosted by the University of Stuttgart in Stuttgart, and will be held from 5 - 7 May 2008.

SWIFT Supports Bled Declaration PDF Print E-mail

At its second meeting from 12 - 14 March 2008 in Murcia, Spain, the SWIFT project decided to adopt the socalled Bled declaration titled Towards a European approach to the Future Internet. The declaration recognises that a "significant change is required and the European Internet scientific and economic ctors, researchers, industrialists, SMEs, users, service and content providers, now assert the urgent necessity to redesign the Internet, taking a broad multidisciplinary approach, to meet Europe’s societal and commercial ambitions.

The latest version of the declaration recognizes the importance of Identity Management an essential part of the Future Internet. It identifies "Technologies ensuring the robustness and security of the networks, managing identities, protecting privacy and creating trust in the on-line world" as part of the design, development and experimental work.

Welcome to the SWIFT Project Pages! PDF Print E-mail

Thanks for visiting our web pages. They are intended to give you an overview of the challenges related to Identity Management that our project is addressing. We have picked up on key research done in previous EU IST projects to apply the concept of what we term "Virtual Identities" to the network, and to bridge this to other domains. Privacy as well as new opportunities for operators are two of our key interests.

Identity Management is considered key to private, legal and business transactions as in the European eIDM2010. IdM frameworks are however currently confined to the web services domain. SWIFT goes beyond this by including user centricity and network operators as additional interdependent domains with IdM at the core.
